Destination Guide · North India
North India has two completely different travel windows — the plains (Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan) are best October to March, while the hills (Shimla, Manali, Kashmir, Ladakh) each have their own season. This guide breaks it down by sub-zone so you pick the right month for your specific trip.
North India is not one climate — it's two completely different travel worlds sitting in the same zone. The plains (Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Rajasthan, Amritsar) have a classic North Indian climate: cold winters, brutal summers and a manageable monsoon. The mountains (Shimla, Manali, Kashmir, Ladakh) each operate on a completely different calendar where winter means road closures, not sightseeing weather.
Understanding this split is the single most important step in planning a North India trip. Many travellers book a Manali trip in January without realising the Rohtang Pass is closed, or plan a Golden Triangle in May without accounting for 44°C heat. This guide is structured to prevent exactly that.

Chat on WhatsAppThe best month for your North India trip also depends on what kind of trip you're planning — not just where you're going.
North India packing varies enormously by sub-zone and month. The same trip in January means a light jacket in Jaipur and a heavy down coat in Shimla or Leh.
Common questions about the best time to visit North India — answered for Indian travellers planning domestic trips.
October to March is the best overall window for North India plains — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi and Amritsar are all excellent. For hill stations (Shimla, Manali), April–June is best. For Ladakh and high-altitude roads, June–September is the only window. For Kashmir, April–June and September–October are both excellent.
Yes — January is one of the best months for the Taj Mahal. The weather is cool and clear (8–15°C), making sunrise and sunset visits spectacular. The only risk is morning fog in the first two weeks of January, which can reduce visibility. Book an early morning entry ticket and have a backup plan for a midday visit if fog is forecast.
It depends on what you want. Summer (May–September) is for road trips, Rohtang Pass, Leh highway, river rafting and Solang Valley activities. The road is open and the valley is green. Winter (December–February) is for snow and the beautiful snow-covered town — but Rohtang Pass is closed and many activities are not available. Most first-time visitors prefer May–September.
June to September is the only viable window for Ladakh. July and August are peak season with all roads and destinations open — Pangong Lake, Nubra Valley, Tso Moriri and Zanskar are all accessible. September is excellent with fewer crowds. The Manali–Leh and Srinagar–Leh highways are closed from November to May.
Kashmir has three distinct windows: April–May for tulip blooms and spring flowers, June–August for houseboat season and summer activities, and September–October for stunning autumn colours on the chinar trees. All three are excellent for different experiences. Avoid December–March unless going for skiing at Gulmarg.
Not easily — their best months don't overlap. Golden Triangle (Delhi–Agra–Jaipur) is best October–March, while Manali is best May–September. The only overlap months are October and March–April, which work adequately for both. If combining, plan Delhi–Agra–Jaipur first (October–March) then do Manali as a separate trip in May–September.
Dev Deepawali falls 15 days after Diwali — in 2026 this lands in November. All 84 ghats in Varanasi are lit with over one million oil lamps, and the Ganga aarti is performed simultaneously from all major ghats. It is the single most magical evening in North India travel. Book accommodation in Varanasi 3–4 months ahead as the city fills completely — budget and mid-range rooms are especially scarce.
