Destination Guide · Northeast India
Northeast India is India’s most misunderstood travel zone for timing. October–April is the broad window but each state has its own peak. Hornbill Festival (December 1–10 in Nagaland) is the crown jewel. Kaziranga closes June 1. Arunachal Pradesh is best April–June. Three states require Inner Line Permits. This guide cuts through the complexity.
Northeast India — the Seven Sisters (Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura) plus Sikkim — is India’s most biodiverse and culturally rich travel zone. It is also the least visited, making it one of the most rewarding for those who come.
The broad window is October to April — when Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland are all excellent simultaneously. Within this window, specific sub-zones have their own peaks: Hornbill Festival (December 1–10) in Nagaland is the crown jewel of Northeast Indian travel. Kaziranga closes June 1 and reopens November 1. Arunachal Pradesh (Tawang, Ziro Valley) is best April–June. Meghalaya’s living root bridges are best October–May when the paths are dry.
Three states — Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram — require Inner Line Permits (ILP) for Indian citizens. Always apply 7–14 days in advance. This guide includes a full permit section.

December 1–10 for Hornbill Festival in Nagaland is the single most compelling event. Arunachal Pradesh (Tawang) is best April–June when Sela Pass is open.
Hornbill Festival runs December 1–10 every year at Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima, Nagaland. All 16 Naga tribes perform simultaneously — traditional dances, warrior displays, log drum competitions, naga cuisine and craft stalls. It is the most extraordinary tribal cultural event in India. Nagaland requires an ILP (Inner Line Permit) — apply online at nagalandilp.in before travelling. Book Kohima accommodation 3–4 months ahead as the city fills completely.
Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram require Inner Line Permits (ILP) for all Indian citizens. Apply online through respective state portals (nagalandilp.in, arunachalilp.in, ilp.mizoram.gov.in) 7–14 days before travel. Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur valley do not require permits. Sikkim needs permits only for North Sikkim and Nathula Pass. Always carry physical printouts — there are checkpoints at state borders.
Kaziranga National Park is open November 1 to May 31. It closes completely June 1 when monsoon floods the park. February to April is the best window for rhino sightings — the dry season reduces vegetation and concentrates animals near water holes. The unique elephant-back safaris operate in the morning session only. Book jeep and elephant safaris through your hotel or tour operator 2–4 weeks ahead for peak season slots.
Ziro Music Festival is India’s most acclaimed indie and folk music festival, held annually in September in Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh — an Apatani tribal heartland at 1,500m altitude. Despite falling in monsoon season, the festival always goes ahead. Artists from across India and internationally perform. The combination of music, tribal culture and misty mountain setting makes it uniquely atmospheric. Arunachal Pradesh ILP required — apply 2 weeks ahead. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead.
Yes for Assam and Meghalaya — both are well-connected with reasonable tourist infrastructure and no permits for Indian citizens. For Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, a local guide or travel agent is strongly recommended — not just for ILP assistance but for navigating remote roads, homestay bookings and tribal village etiquette. For first-time Northeast travellers, a WishToGo Northeast specialist takes the complexity out of multi-state circuit planning.
