Best Time to Visit Northeast India (2026 Guide)

Northeast India is India’s most misunderstood travel zone for timing. October–April is the broad window but each state has its own peak. Hornbill Festival (December 1–10 in Nagaland) is the crown jewel. Kaziranga closes June 1. Arunachal Pradesh is best April–June. Three states require Inner Line Permits. This guide cuts through the complexity.

Best Time to Visit Northeast India — Overview

Northeast India — the Seven Sisters (Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura) plus Sikkim — is India’s most biodiverse and culturally rich travel zone. It is also the least visited, making it one of the most rewarding for those who come.

The broad window is October to April — when Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland are all excellent simultaneously. Within this window, specific sub-zones have their own peaks: Hornbill Festival (December 1–10) in Nagaland is the crown jewel of Northeast Indian travel. Kaziranga closes June 1 and reopens November 1. Arunachal Pradesh (Tawang, Ziro Valley) is best April–June. Meghalaya’s living root bridges are best October–May when the paths are dry.

Three states — Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram — require Inner Line Permits (ILP) for Indian citizens. Always apply 7–14 days in advance. This guide includes a full permit section.

Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are the three most off-the-beaten-path states in Northeast India. Manipur’s Loktak Lake (the floating national park — home of the Sangai deer) is one of India’s most extraordinary natural wonders. Mizoram’s terraced hillscapes and Christian culture are unique in India. Tripura’s Ujjayanta Palace and Tripura Sundari temple are accessible heritage sites. October–March is best for all three. What to Pack — Northeast India

Northeast India packing requires thinking about both the jungle and the mountains — often in the same trip.

Assam & Meghalaya (Oct–Apr)
  • Light layers — valley days warm (20–27°C), mornings cool
  • Rain jacket year-round — Meghalaya can get showers even in peak season
  • Good grip trekking shoes for root bridge trails
  • Insect repellent — essential near forests and water
  • Cash — ATMs unreliable outside major towns
Nagaland & Hornbill Festival
  • Warm layers — Kohima December is cold (6–14°C)
  • Print copy of ILP permit — checkpoints at state border
  • Conservative clothing for village homestays
  • Cash — Nagaland is largely a cash economy
  • Camera battery backup — festival photography is intense
Arunachal Pradesh (Tawang)
  • Heavy warm jacket — Tawang nights can drop to −5°C in spring
  • ILP print copy mandatory at multiple checkpoints
  • Altitude sickness medicine (Sela Pass 4,170m — consult doctor)
  • Portable oxygen can (optional but reassuring)
  • Sufficient cash — no ATMs between Tezpur and Tawang
Safari — Kaziranga (Nov–Apr)
  • Muted clothing (khaki, olive) for jeep and elephant safaris
  • Dust mask or buff for open jeep rides
  • Binoculars — greatly enhance rhino and tiger sightings
  • Light warm layer for dawn safaris (6am start, mist and dew)
  • Waterproof bag for camera equipment
Monsoon Travel (Jun–Sep)
  • Heavy waterproof jacket — lightweight ponchos useless in Northeast rain
  • Waterproof trekking boots — leeches active in monsoon forests
  • Leech socks for forest treks
  • Dry bags for electronics — humidity is extreme
  • Flexible itinerary — road closures and landslides are common
Multi-State Northeast Circuit
  • Printed ILP copies for each restricted state (Nagaland, Arunachal, Mizoram)
  • Portable power bank — power cuts common in hill towns
  • Offline maps (Google Maps downloaded) — mobile signal patchy in hills
  • Local SIM from Guwahati — network coverage better than other providers in NE
  • Light first aid kit — remote areas have limited medical facilities
In short: October–April is the broad safe window for Northeast India. October–November is the single best starting window — post-monsoon lush, Kaziranga open, Meghalaya accessible and Hornbill Festival just ahead. December 1–10 for Hornbill Festival in Nagaland is the one event worth planning an entire trip around. Always apply for ILPs (Nagaland, Arunachal, Mizoram) at least 7–14 days in advance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about visiting Northeast India — answered for Indian travellers planning their first Northeast trip.

What is the best time to visit Northeast India overall?

October to April is the best overall window. October–November is the finest starting period — post-monsoon freshness, Kaziranga newly opened, Meghalaya accessible and Hornbill Festival approaching. December 1–10 for Hornbill Festival in Nagaland is the single most compelling event. Arunachal Pradesh (Tawang) is best April–June when Sela Pass is open.

What is the Hornbill Festival and how do I plan for it?

Hornbill Festival runs December 1–10 every year at Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima, Nagaland. All 16 Naga tribes perform simultaneously — traditional dances, warrior displays, log drum competitions, naga cuisine and craft stalls. It is the most extraordinary tribal cultural event in India. Nagaland requires an ILP (Inner Line Permit) — apply online at nagalandilp.in before travelling. Book Kohima accommodation 3–4 months ahead as the city fills completely.

Which Northeast states require an ILP permit?

Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram require Inner Line Permits (ILP) for all Indian citizens. Apply online through respective state portals (nagalandilp.in, arunachalilp.in, ilp.mizoram.gov.in) 7–14 days before travel. Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Manipur valley do not require permits. Sikkim needs permits only for North Sikkim and Nathula Pass. Always carry physical printouts — there are checkpoints at state borders.

When is Kaziranga open and what is the best time for rhino safaris?

Kaziranga National Park is open November 1 to May 31. It closes completely June 1 when monsoon floods the park. February to April is the best window for rhino sightings — the dry season reduces vegetation and concentrates animals near water holes. The unique elephant-back safaris operate in the morning session only. Book jeep and elephant safaris through your hotel or tour operator 2–4 weeks ahead for peak season slots.

What is the Ziro Music Festival?

Ziro Music Festival is India’s most acclaimed indie and folk music festival, held annually in September in Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh — an Apatani tribal heartland at 1,500m altitude. Despite falling in monsoon season, the festival always goes ahead. Artists from across India and internationally perform. The combination of music, tribal culture and misty mountain setting makes it uniquely atmospheric. Arunachal Pradesh ILP required — apply 2 weeks ahead. Book accommodation 2–3 months ahead.

Can I visit Northeast India without a travel agent?

Yes for Assam and Meghalaya — both are well-connected with reasonable tourist infrastructure and no permits for Indian citizens. For Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, a local guide or travel agent is strongly recommended — not just for ILP assistance but for navigating remote roads, homestay bookings and tribal village etiquette. For first-time Northeast travellers, a WishToGo Northeast specialist takes the complexity out of multi-state circuit planning.

What is the best 7–10 day Northeast India circuit?

For October–November: Guwahati (2 nights) → Kaziranga safari (2 nights) → Shillong (2 nights) → Cherrapunji root bridges (1 night) → Dawki (1 day) → fly home from Guwahati. For December: Same circuit but end with Kohima and Hornbill Festival (3 nights). Apply for Nagaland ILP 2 weeks before. For a 10-day Arunachal circuit: Guwahati → Tezpur → Tawang (3 nights) → Ziro (2 nights) → Guwahati. Best April–June when Sela Pass is open.
