Best Time to Visit India (2026 Guide)
India is a year-round destination — but the right time depends entirely on where you're going. Rajasthan, Goa, Kerala, the Himalayas, Northeast India and the islands each have their own best windows, shoulder seasons and months to avoid. This guide gives you zone-by-zone breakdowns, real temperature data, a live weather checker, festival calendar and packing tips.
Best Time to Visit India — Overview
India experiences four broad travel seasons that affect planning differently depending on which zone you're visiting. Understanding these — and knowing they don't apply uniformly across the country — is the most important step in any India trip plan.
India's climate is governed by three main forces: the Southwest Monsoon (June–September) bringing bulk annual rainfall; the Northeast Monsoon (October–December) bringing rain to Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh; and the Himalayan winter (November–March) pushing cold air into the north while leaving peninsular India warm.

What to Pack — By Season & Zone
Packing for India requires thinking by zone, not just by month. The same month can mean light cotton in Kerala and a down jacket in Leh-Ladakh.
- Light layers during day; warm jacket for evenings (Delhi 8–15°C nights Dec–Jan)
- Rajasthan evenings: medium-weight sweater essential
- Comfortable walking shoes for forts and monuments
- Sunscreen — winter sun in Rajasthan deceptively intense
- Modest clothing — temples require covered shoulders and knees
- Thermals, down jacket, gloves and woolly hat for high altitude
- Altitude sickness medicine (Diamox) for Leh — consult doctor before trip
- Waterproof trekking boots with ankle support
- High SPF (50+) sunscreen — UV doubles at altitude
- Cash — ATMs unreliable in Leh, Tawang and remote areas
- Light breathable cotton — loose and modest for temple visits
- Sandals plus closed walking shoes for heritage town walks
- Light rain jacket — Kerala gets afternoon showers even in peak season
- Sunscreen and wide-brim hat — South India sun strong year-round
- Insect repellent — important for backwater and forest stays
- Quality waterproof rain jacket — ponchos ineffective in heavy rain
- Waterproof footwear or quick-dry sandals
- Dry bags or ziplock bags for phone, passport and electronics
- Light cotton layers — humidity very high (85–95% in Kerala, Goa)
- Insect repellent — mosquito risk highest in monsoon season
- Rain jacket year-round — unexpected heavy showers even in November
- Warm layers for Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh
- Physical copies of ILP and Aadhaar card — checkpoints throughout
- Portable power bank — outages common in remote areas
- Good-grip trekking shoes — essential for living root bridge trek
- Swimwear, quick-dry cover-up, reef-safe sunscreen (required Lakshadweep)
- High SPF waterproof sunscreen — tropical beach UV extremely intense
- Modest clothing for town visits and restaurants away from beach
- Personal prescription medicines — pharmacies limited in islands
- Waterproof dry bag for boat trips and water sports
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the best time to visit India — answered for Indian travellers planning domestic trips.
What is the overall best time to visit India?
October to March is the best overall window. October–November and February–March are golden shoulder months with excellent weather and 15–25% lower prices than peak December–January. For hill stations specifically, April–June is the right window. For Nagaland's Hornbill Festival, plan around December 1–10.
Which months should I avoid for India travel?
May–June is extremely hot in the plains (Delhi, Agra, Varanasi, Rajasthan and Gujarat reach 42–47°C) — avoid heritage sightseeing. July–September is monsoon — most beach and desert destinations are heavily rain-affected. However, monsoon is excellent for Kerala, Coorg, Goa (off-season) and the Western Ghats. Kaziranga National Park is completely closed June–October.
When is Goa best to visit?
November to February is Goa's peak beach season — warm (27–32°C), dry and sunny. December–January is the busiest with prices surging 30–50%. October–November and February–March are excellent shoulder months. July–September is Goa's monsoon — green, lush, quiet and 40–50% cheaper; many experienced travellers specifically prefer monsoon Goa.
When is the best time to visit Kerala?
November to February is best for Kerala — coast, backwaters and most of the state are cool, dry and beautiful. Munnar and Wayanad are best April–June. Kerala's monsoon (June–September) is the Ayurveda treatment season — resorts offer significant discounts and the Western Ghats are dramatically lush. Onam (August–September) is Kerala's biggest festival.
What is the best time to visit Rajasthan?
October to March is ideal — comfortable temperatures (12–28°C), clear blue skies, forts and palaces looking extraordinary in winter light. November to February is peak season — hotels in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer must be booked ahead. March is a beautiful shoulder month with Holi (March 2026) in Mathura. Avoid April–June (40–44°C) and July–September (heavy monsoon).
When is the best time to visit Northeast India?
October to November is the single best window — Kaziranga open, mountain views crystal-clear, Meghalaya rivers at their clearest, roads fully accessible. March–April is excellent for Sikkim's rhododendron season. December 1–10 is specifically for the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland. Avoid July–August — Kaziranga closes and Arunachal and Nagaland mountain roads frequently wash out.
When should I book to get the best prices?
For peak season (November–February) in Goa, Kerala and Rajasthan, book accommodation 45–60 days ahead. For hill stations in April–June, book 30–45 days ahead. School holiday windows push all prices up 20–40% — travelling just before or after these windows gives much better value. The Hornbill Festival (December 1–10, Nagaland) requires booking 3–4 months ahead.
