Destination Guide · South India
South India is comfortable almost year-round — but each sub-zone has its own best window. Kerala is finest November–March, Goa peaks November–February, hill stations shine April–June and the Andaman Islands are open only November–April. This guide breaks it down so you pick the exact right month for your trip.
South India is the most forgiving zone in India for travel timing — there's genuinely no completely bad month across the entire zone. The key is matching your specific destination to the right window. Goa and Kerala beaches are best November–February. Hill stations (Ooty, Munnar, Coorg) are best April–June and October–November. Andaman Islands are open only November–April. Tamil Nadu's coast has a unique Northeast monsoon in October–December when the rest of South India is dry.
This split is what confuses most travellers — the monsoon calendar in South India is more complex than the rest of India because two separate monsoon systems affect the region at different times. The Southwest monsoon (June–September) hits Kerala, Goa and the west coast first. The Northeast monsoon (October–December) then brings rain to Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and the Andhra coast — the opposite time.

Common questions about the best time to visit South India — answered for Indian travellers planning domestic trips.
November to March is the best overall window. Kerala backwaters, Goa beaches, Karnataka heritage, Andaman islands and Tamil Nadu temple circuit are all excellent. October is outstanding for Karnataka (Mysore Dasara). The one exception is the Tamil Nadu coast, which gets its Northeast monsoon in November–December.
November to February is best for Kerala overall — backwaters, coast and most of the state are ideal. Munnar hill station is excellent April–June. Kerala's monsoon (June–September) is the traditional Ayurveda season — resorts offer treatments at 30–50% lower prices and the countryside is dramatically lush. Onam (August–September) includes spectacular snake boat races at Alleppey.
November to February is Goa's peak beach season — warm, dry and fully operational. March is the best value month with great weather and lower prices than December–January. Goa's monsoon (June–September) is dramatic and 40–50% cheaper but most beach shacks and water sports are closed. October is a good opening-month option when prices are still reasonable.
November to April is the only viable window for Andaman. January and February are the best months for diving and snorkelling with excellent water clarity and calm seas. December is peak with highest prices. Avoid May–October completely — the seas are extremely rough, most ferries get cancelled and almost all water activities are suspended.
Tamil Nadu's east-facing coast gets the Northeast monsoon (October–December) when the rest of South India is in peak season. This means Chennai, Pondicherry and Mahabalipuram get heavy rain in November–December while Kerala, Goa and Karnataka are sunny. For a South India multi-destination trip, plan Tamil Nadu coast for January–March and use its hill stations (Ooty, Kodaikanal) in April–June instead.
Yes — with the right expectations. Kerala's monsoon is beautiful and the countryside is at its most lush. The main draw is Ayurveda treatments at 30–50% lower prices — this is the traditional season for Panchakarma and rejuvenation therapies. Beach activities and boat tours can be affected by rough weather, but houseboat trips on the backwaters still operate. Onam snake boat races in August–September are a genuine highlight.
Mysore Dasara (Vijayadashami) falls in October — in 2026, check the exact dates as it follows the Hindu calendar. The festival runs for 10 days with the grand finale on Vijayadashami Day featuring a royal procession of caparisoned elephants, a lit-up Mysore Palace and massive public celebrations. Book Mysore accommodation 3–4 months ahead as the city fills completely during this period.
