Checked 13 October 2026. For a short Schengen holiday on an ordinary Indian passport, the main requirement is generally a Schengen visa. ETIAS is intended for eligible visa-exempt travellers and does not replace that visa. This guide to Europe travel rules for Indians separates visa applications, travel authorisation and border checks.

Europe travel rules for Indians: what is ETIAS?
ETIAS is a travel authorisation for eligible visa-exempt visitors. The official EU ETIAS website currently states that the system is not operational and is not collecting applications. Check that official website for launch updates rather than treating old launch dates as confirmed.
Do Indian Passport Holders Need ETIAS?
The European Commission explains that an Indian citizen travelling to the Schengen area for a short stay needs a visa and therefore does not need ETIAS. Holding a US or UK visa does not by itself make an ordinary Indian passport visa-exempt for Schengen travel.
Different passports, residence permits or family-member status can change the applicable rules. Check the requirements for the document you will actually use. See the official EU comparison of EES and ETIAS.
Schengen Visa Planning for Indian Travellers
Follow the destination consulate’s current checklist. It generally covers your passport, purpose of travel, accommodation, financial means, travel medical insurance and intention to return. The passport must normally remain valid for at least three months after your planned departure from the Schengen area.
Fees and Processing
The standard adult visa fee is €90, with reductions or exemptions for some applicants. Application-centre service charges may be additional. Normal processing is 15 days and may extend to 45 days. Appointment availability adds separate planning time; approval is not guaranteed.
See the European Commission’s Schengen application guidance and your destination consulate for the current checklist and application channel.
ETIAS Launch Updates and EES Border Checks
Use the official EU website for ETIAS implementation updates. Avoid relying on the old late-2025 date.
EES is a separate system for recording entries and exits at external borders. It can affect eligible short-stay travellers who already hold a visa; it is not a replacement for a visa. Check the official EES guidance and exemptions.
Schengen Visa, ETIAS and EES: The Difference
| System | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Schengen visa | Visa for travellers whose nationality requires one | Destination consulate, documents, fees and appointment |
| ETIAS | Travel authorisation for eligible visa-exempt travellers | Eligibility and operational status on the official EU website |
| EES | Records eligible travellers’ border entries and exits | Border procedure and applicable exemptions |
Plan Your Europe Trip Before Applying
- Confirm your itinerary and the consulate responsible for your application.
- Allow time for appointments, processing and any additional documents.
- Check each country’s requirements if your route includes destinations outside Schengen, such as the UK.
- Request a written quotation distinguishing visa assistance, official fees and service charges.

Common Questions
Does ETIAS replace a Schengen visa?
No. ETIAS is for eligible visa-exempt travellers; it does not replace a visa that your passport requires.
Does a US or UK visa remove my Schengen visa requirement?
Do not assume that it does. Check the rules for your nationality, travel document and any residence status.
Where should I apply?
Use the responsible consulate and its authorised application channel. Confirm the correct destination; an unrelated country’s appointment page is not the right source.
